Understanding Chinese Medicine
Chinese medicine is a 4,000 year old medical system that utilizes acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other techniques to treat disease and promote health and vitality. The principles of diagnosis and treatment evolved from observation of the cycles of nature and patterns of change within the human body.

The practice of Chinese medicine is based on the understanding that disease occurs when environmental or internal stressors create disruption in the natural flow of energy (qi) within the body. This energetic imbalance manifests as a person’s unique pattern of signs and symptoms, and emerges from a confluence of factors: the cause of diseases (such as a germ, poor diet, or emotional stress), the person’s constitution (inborn physical and mental strengths and weaknesses), one’s age, activities, and way of life.

Chinese medicine’s tools stimulate the body’s ability to self-adjust and self-regulate as well as to restore the body’s flow of qi. As a result, symptoms resolve, and normal, efficient physiological function returns.

It is also critical, in order to prevent the recurrence of symptoms, to understand as much as possible how and why the imbalance began. This understanding of one’s body and energy aids the healing process.

Chinese medicine is highly complementary to, and is often used with, western medical treatment.
